Dead fish and squid are washing up on shore near Nawiliwili on Kauai and the state Department of Land and Natural Resources is trying to figure out why.  Between 500 and 800 lanternfish and squid were either dead or dying in the area.  Both types of marine life live in waters 300 to 600 feet deep or deeper. They migrate to shallower waters during the night.  Staff from the Division of Aquatic Resources and U.S. Geological Survey biologists are collecting samples to determine why the fish and squid are dying. Authorities are asking anyone who sees any dead fish or squid in the area to report it on the Eyes of the Reef Network website.
