Marine Life Dying Because of Sticky Spill

Marine Life Dying Because of Sticky Spill

Fish in Honolulu Harbor and Keehi Lagoon are dying in large numbers after hundreds of thousands of gallons of molasses leaked into the water Tuesday through a broken pipe at Matson's Sand Island molasses operation.  State officials have posted signs warning people to stay out of the water in the area and they are still trying to assess the environmental damage from the spill.  Officials believe a corroded pipe that runs under Pier 52 at Sand Island and pumps molasses exports onto Matson cargo ships caused the spill.  About 1,400 tons -- 233,000 gallons --  of molasses spilled into the ocean, and it's basically suffocating the marine life.  Now, there's a concern that sharks will be coming into the area because of all the dead fish.  The leaky pipe has since been sealed.
