Mayor Caldwell Outlines Vision for the City

Mayor Caldwell Outlines Vision for the City
Posted February 26th, 2014 @ 12:00pm

Mayor Kirk Caldwell said he will eliminate 618 vacant positions with the city and cut funding for additional slots. That would free up $37 million annually in the city's $2 billion operating budget. He delivered his state of the City Wednesday at McCoy Pavilion in Ala Moana Park. He says improving public parks is one of his priorities. He also plans to continue repaving Oahu's roads,  update residents on progress on the city's rail project, and deal with the issue he says the city gets the most complaints about -- the homeless problem. Caldwell proposed spending $18.9 million of the city's Affordable Housing funds on the administration's Housing First shelter program, which he says gets homeless into housing with "an effective support system" to cope with addictions and other mental illnesses.
