Posted January 29th, 2014 @ 4:54pm

Trial has been set for a former professional boxer who was indicted by a Hilo grand jury in the 2011 beating death of a toddler.  Thirty-eight-year-old Xavier "Pee Wee" Cortez Jr. of Mountain View is scheduled to go on trial June 2. He is charged with second-degree murder in the death of 18-month-old Pomaikai Ferreira. The girl was taken to Hilo Medical Center January 2, 2012 with breathing difficulties.  She was transferred to Honolulu's Queen's Medical Center, where she died. An autopsy showed injuries due to repetitive abusive head trauma. Cortez was living with the girl's mother at the time. He was arrested, but released pending further investigation.  He was arrested again Tuesday and charged. He pleaded not guilty and is being held on $1 million bail.
